From discovery to delivery

The journey from early engagement to receiving an order typically spans several months and includes detailed communication with multiple stakeholders like designers, architects, QS, contractors, and specialists.

Discovery Call

We refine the vision further: confirming finishes, timelines, and project requirements. At this stage, we often provide samples of preferred hardware to support material boards and design approval.

Specification & Cost

We prepare indicative pricing across a selection of door sets (latching, privacy, locking, sliding), providing a clear picture of what can be achieved. Where appropriate, Quantity Surveyors and project leads may engage to discuss alignment with the wider scheme.

Ironmongery & Hardware

With direction established, we produce a detailed, door-by-door ironmongery schedule. This stage is meticulous and often developed in pre-tender, to ensure seamless coordination.

Collaboration

Our proposals are shared with tendering parties, which may include Main Contractors or Specialist Joinery Contractors. We work closely with the appointed team to refine the schedule in line with the final design and delivery plans. Revisions are normal as the design evolves, and we maintain flexibility to respond quickly.

Confirmation & Procurement

Once confirmed, we receive the official order and deposit. We begin procuring items tailored specifically to the project. Lead time is typically 6–10 weeks, depending on complexity and finishes

Frequently Asked Questions on Architectural Design Hardware

How do I choose architectural hardware that complements my interior design scheme?

Choosing architectural hardware begins with understanding the overall design intent of the space. Hardware should feel like a natural extension of the architecture and interiors, supporting proportion, materiality, and mood rather than competing with it. We guide designers through form, finish, and functionality, ensuring each piece enhances the scheme and sits comfortably alongside doors, joinery, and key architectural details.

Do all door, cabinet, and window hardware finishes need to match in a luxury project?

Finishes don’t need to match exactly, but they should be thoughtfully coordinated. In luxury interiors, cohesion often comes from a shared material palette or complementary tones rather than uniformity. We help designers balance consistency and contrast, aligning finishes across doors, cabinets, and windows so the hardware feels intentional, layered, and refined throughout the project.

When should architectural hardware be selected during the design process?

Architectural hardware is best considered early in the design process, ideally alongside door, joinery, and window design. Early engagement allows finishes, proportions, and technical requirements to be properly integrated, avoiding compromises later. We often work with designers during concept and pre-tender stages to support design development and ensure smooth progression through the build.

How can Opitome support designers who don’t have time to manage hardware specification?

We act as a dedicated hardware partner, managing the detail-heavy aspects of specification on behalf of designers. From advising on finishes and functionality to producing coordinated schedules and managing procurement, we take on the complexity so designers can stay focused on the wider project. Our role is to reduce risk, save time, and ensure every detail aligns with the original design intent.

How do you specify architectural design hardware for a residential or commercial project?

Specification begins with a clear understanding of the project requirements, including use, performance, and aesthetic goals. We review drawings and layouts, then develop a detailed, door-by-door ironmongery schedule covering latching, locking, privacy, and special conditions. This structured approach ensures clarity for contractors, accurate pricing, and seamless coordination across the project.

What are the typical lead times for luxury or bespoke architectural hardware?

Lead times for luxury architectural hardware typically range from six to ten weeks, depending on finishes, quantities, and whether bespoke elements are involved. Because many items are made to order, early confirmation is key. We advise on realistic timelines, coordinate phased deliveries where needed, and ensure hardware arrives when it’s required, without disruption to the wider programme.
