Architectural hardware is not solely about aesthetics. It acts as the primary point of physical contact between a building and its occupants. For interior designers shaping high-end residential spaces, specifying the right fittings is about balancing visual appeal with tactile quality.
The hardware you choose has to feel substantial in the hand while visually supporting the broader architectural vision.

The recent collaboration between renowned German manufacturer Franz Schneider Brakel and Foster + Partners Industrial Design has produced a range of fittings that perfectly capture this delicate balance. In this post, we're taking a closer look at the [FSB 1292](https://www.opitome.co.uk/bespoke-door-handle) collection to understand how its restrained visual language and expertly engineered components set a completely new standard for contemporary interiors.
## **The Design Principles Behind The FSB 1292 Collection**
The FSB 1292 range represents the evolution of its predecessor, the highly regarded 1291 series. Foster + Partners approached this new iteration with a clear focus on extending the grip and refining the overall silhouette.
The result is a collection defined by an elegant freehand curve. This softer geometry represents a deliberate departure from harsh angular lines, offering something far more tactile and refined.
By drawing inspiration from the honest functionality of everyday tools, the design team created fittings that feel entirely natural to use while maintaining a crisp, modern aesthetic.
## **A Focus On Ergonomic Detailing**
High-end hardware must do more than please aesthetically. It has to perform flawlessly day after day, meaning form can never take precedence over function.
The soft lines of this collection aren't simply stylistic choices. They are rooted in a practical understanding of human ergonomics. The subtle curve of the [lever handle](https://opitome.co.uk/blog/history-of-door-handles) sits perfectly in the hand to ensure a comfortable and secure grip every single time a door is opened. This precise attention to physical interaction is exactly what elevates well-resolved architectural fittings above standard alternatives. Every element is meticulously proportioned to feel mechanically substantial yet elegant in its application.
## **Why The FSB 1292 Won The 2026 iF Design Award**
Recognition from international design bodies serves as a strong indicator of exceptional industrial design.
It's easy to see why this particular collaboration won Gold in the highly respected 2026 iF Design Award. The jury praised the masterfully executed duality of spatial interaction, noting how the hardware acts as a physical representation of opening up and closing off spaces. This conceptual depth proves that functional building components can still hold great design value, telling a story while facilitating an everyday function.
## **A Sculptural Statement**
The judging panel highlighted how the collection elevates a purely functional component into a remarkable sculptural statement.
Rather than pleading for attention with overly complex detailing, the fittings rely on understated elegance and refined proportions to make an impact. As the jury rightly pointed out, understatement often makes the strongest statement of all.
This philosophy aligns perfectly with the current shift in interior design towards refined confidence, where the focus remains strictly on craftsmanship and lasting quality.
## **Integrating FSB Door Hardware Into High-End Residential Settings**
When specifying for architect-designed homes and contemporary apartments, interior designers need fittings that complement rather than overpower the surrounding architecture. The restrained visual language of FSB door hardware makes it an incredibly versatile choice for ambitious residential projects. Whether it's set against the raw texture of exposed concrete, the crispness of painted plaster, or the warmth of natural timber joinery, the clean lines of the handle integrate seamlessly into the overall design scheme.
## **Finish Consistency Across The Project**
A major challenge in ambitious residential design is maintaining a cohesive visual motif throughout a property. This collection directly addresses that issue by offering a complete family of coordinated components.
Designers can specify the exact same design language from the main entrance doors through to interior rooms and window fittings. This level of specification consistency brings a profound sense of calm and architectural order to complex interior schemes.
## **Material Quality And Long-Term Durability**
[Aesthetic appeal](https://www.opitome.co.uk/blog/architectural-design-hardware-finishing-touches) is only one part of the specification process. The underlying material quality dictates how hardware will age and perform over decades of daily use.
FSB manufactures this specific collection in three highly durable, engineered options: solid aluminium, stainless steel and bronze. The aluminium variants offer a lightweight yet incredibly robust solution that's infinitely recyclable, making it ideal for sustainability-focused projects. Stainless steel provides unmatched corrosion resistance and hygiene for demanding environments.
## **Timeless Appeal**
For spaces requiring a warmer, more organic touch, the bronze finish stands out as an exceptional choice. Bronze naturally patinates over time, developing a unique character that responds directly to the specific environment and usage patterns of the home. Architects and designers continue to prioritise these honest, high-quality materials over trend-led alternatives because they truly understand the value of longevity. Heavily plated hardware quickly shows its age, whereas solid, engineered components simply grow more beautiful with daily use.
This collaboration between Foster + Partners and FSB demonstrates exactly what can be achieved when architectural vision meets precise manufacturing. By combining ergonomic comfort with timeless material finishes, the resulting collection offers interior designers a robust, elegant solution for their most demanding residential projects.
