Art Deco is one of the most recognisable design movements of the twentieth century. Emerging in the 1920s and 1930s, it introduced a bold new visual language built on bold geometry and strong visual forms.
[](https://www.opitome.co.uk/hs/cta/wi/redirect?encryptedPayload=AVxigLKbtW7TYBeJfMW2k5LoMuxYN4k4FcLQx0YoteYVF2hwHWe7ZV2OY3zLHSlybNE3h4vc4YVStyCzy7p%2B73afdHp4%2BSpbyTlwJMHuTbuHgb0CTz6NPQr%2FyBc3Fq2RHFU7ddiBFYYeAbX83KwUKbiAr%2B7CtSNHcWkQAAv%2BFzdCxVmv6UfMdOZIqmqjBt4c7AJkYOH1KAxZSdvvpTjA&webInteractiveContentId=262677618908&portalId=146364361)
These ideas extended beyond architecture and furniture into the details people interact with every day, including hardware. [Art Deco style furniture hardware](https://www.opitome.co.uk/architectural-design-hardware) reflects the same principles of order and modernity seen in the buildings and interiors of the era.
Handles, knobs and fittings were designed with disciplined shapes and carefully considered proportions. Rather than ornate decoration, hardware from this era relies on symmetry, precision, and refined surface detail.
For interior designers, understanding these forms is key to specifying hardware that feels authentic rather than simply decorative.
## The Design Philosophy Behind Art Deco
Art Deco was developed during a period of rapid technological and cultural change. Designers wanted objects that felt modern, confident and forward-looking.
Unlike earlier decorative styles that focused on intricate ornamentation, this style emphasised:
- Clear geometry
- Symmetry and balance
- Precision craftsmanship
- Luxurious yet controlled materials
The result was a style that felt structured and deliberate. Every detail had a purpose.
During this period, interiors often relied on strong lines and bold shapes to express modern elegance. Hardware naturally became an extension of this design philosophy.

## Art Deco Shapes and Forms
The most distinctive aspect of this style of hardware is its disciplined use of shapes, which are repeated across handles, knobs and fittings, creating a recognisable visual language.
### **Stepped Profiles**
One of the most iconic forms is the stepped profile.
This layered shape appears in architecture, furniture and hardware. In door fittings, stepped backplates or handles create a sense of structure and depth while maintaining symmetry.
The form often echoes the silhouette of skyscrapers, a defining influence on this style’s design.
### **Linear Detailing**
Art Deco hardware frequently features strong horizontal or vertical lines.
These linear details might appear as:
- Grooved handles
- Layered edges
- Structured backplates
The effect is clean and architectural. Rather than decorative flourishes, lines create rhythm and visual order.
### **Fluted Surfaces**
Fluting, shallow vertical grooves, is another common feature of Art Deco style furniture hardware.
This detail adds texture without overwhelming the [design](https://www.opitome.co.uk/blog/why-ironmongery-matters-in-modern-design). It also catches light in subtle ways, giving hardware a sense of depth and craftsmanship. Fluted knobs and handles were particularly popular during the 1920s and 1930s.
Hardware For Doors and Windows
The distinctive geometry of this era appears across many types of ironmongery.
### **Door Hardware**
Art Deco door handles and knobs often use symmetrical shapes, such as:
- Rectangular levers
- Stepped backplates
- Circular or octagonal knobs
These shapes reinforce the structured look that defines the period. Door knobs from this period often pair simple geometric forms with polished finishes, creating hardware that feels both modern and luxurious.
### **Window Fittings**
These principles are also visible in window hardware. Window handles and fasteners often feature straight lines and streamlined forms that mirror the architecture of the surrounding building.
Well-designed Art Deco window fittings maintain strong geometry while remaining practical and durable.
Across both doors and windows, proportion is essential. Hardware must be carefully scaled to suit the joinery it sits on.

## The Importance of Proportion and Finish
Art Deco may appear bold, but its impact relies heavily on balance.
Handles and knobs are typically well-proportioned, with clean silhouettes that complement the surrounding door or cabinet rather than overpower it.
Finish also plays an important role. Materials often associated with this period include:
- Polished brass
- Chrome
- Nickel
- Bronze
These finishes reflect light and enhance the clean geometry of the hardware.
The combination of proportion, material and surface detail helps create the refined look associated with that period.
## Using Art Deco Hardware in Contemporary Interiors
Although this style is rooted in the early twentieth century, its design principles remain relevant today. In fact, interior designers often incorporate this hardware style in two main contexts.
### **Period Restorations**
In historic buildings, carefully specified hardware helps maintain architectural authenticity.
Choosing fittings that reflect the correct Art Deco forms ensures that doors, windows and cabinetry feel consistent with the period.
### **Contemporary Spaces**
Hardware from this era can also work well in modern interiors. Its geometric clarity pairs naturally with contemporary materials such as stone, glass and metal. Even a single piece of [Art Deco style furniture hardware](https://www.opitome.co.uk/architectural-design-hardware) can introduce structure and visual interest within an otherwise minimal space.
The key is thoughtful specification. Hardware should complement the wider design scheme rather than compete with it.
## A Design Language in Its Own Right
Art Deco hardware demonstrates how small details can express a broader design philosophy.
Through geometry, symmetry and carefully crafted surfaces, these fittings reflect the movement’s commitment to order and modernity.
When specified thoughtfully, Art Deco shapes and forms can reinforce the architectural character of a space, whether in a restored period interior or a contemporary home. Rather than acting as decoration, this ironmongery style becomes part of a coherent design language.
